In 1812, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published a collection of 86 German fairy tales in a book entitled Kinder- und Hausmärchen ("Stories of Children and Families"). In 1814 they released the second volume of 70 fairy tales, bringing the number of stories to 156. The book was reprinted five more times when the Grimm brothers were still alive, each time having new stories and by the seventh edition of 1857, the number had reached 211. Besides the compliments, the Grimm brothers' writings are also criticized, some argue that these fairy tales are not suitable for children even though the title is for children, others criticized the language books that are not "German". The Grimm brothers are not the first to publish folk stories. Since 1697, a Frenchman, Charles Perrault, has published a very popular collection of fairy tales, even in Germany between 1782 and 1787 Johann Karl August Musäus also produced a similar set of books.
